GUI (pronounced gooey) stands for graphical user interface. This is just a fancy term for any program that has graphical elements as opposed to just being text-based. Graphical elements can consist of static images or drawings, as we explored in the previous chapter, or interactive elements like buttons and menus. Aside from just graphical elements, GUIs introduce the event paradigm—events trigger actions. An event can be anything from a key press or mouse click to a timer going off.
