During the summer of 2017, my family and I were on a road trip through Portugal and we came across a small town, Batalha, where a major attraction was a beautiful Dominican monastery, Mosteiro da Batalha, built in the early 1400s.
One room in particular was an architectural marvel: it had a star-vaulted ceiling spanning 19 square meters with no central support! Architect David Huguet had designed a feature that had never been done before, and the work was so risky that only condemned prisoners were used to build this ceiling.
