Most teams I have worked with over the past 15 years respond similarly when I mention report-reviewing. Sighs, frowns, rolled eyes, pointed glances toward certain colleagues – everything indicates that for most people, reviewing is the thief of all joy. But what do we mean by the term, and why do we put ourselves through the pain of the activity?

In theory, each review should have a specific purpose or focus, with the reviewer selected for his or her expertise in the relevant area. In practice, most people interpret review as anything from “mark up every single typo as well as questioning content and structure” to “completely rewrite the draft in my own style.” ...
