Never have people been more alert—in a more deeply personal way—to matters of trust. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, virtually every individual in the world had to gauge how much they trusted every other individual they came in contact with, including members of their own families. Masks—and their absence—became visible signs of how much others could be trusted to care about one’s welfare.
