A 70 cm Quad loop aerial

Introduction

This is a description of how to make an aerial for the 70 cm band which has gain compared with the ‘rubber duck’ or the dipole aerial. It can easily be dismantled and reassembled, making it ideal for contest use.

The principles

Most aerials which comprise several similar elements arranged along a boom are variations of the design originated by Yagi and Uda, and which takes the name (for historical reasons) of the former, and is know as the Yagi array. Let us suppose we have a Yagi aerial beaming left to right in front of us. The elements get progressively shorter from the left (look at almost any TV aerial to see this).
