This attribute identifies the NAS that
constructed
the Access-Request packet. Most often, the
fully qualified domain
name (FQDN) is used in the value portion of this attribute (for
instance,
local-nas3.raleigh.corp.hasselltech.net),
although the RFC states that the value must be treated as a series of
undistinguished octets. The FQDN is often used to eliminate duplicate
NAS identifiers and reduce confusion for the client.
This attribute is often vendor specific and each implementation may have customized the use and behavior of this attribute. Additionally, in transactions involving a proxy server, this value can become mangled.
