The Ruby on Rails gem and plugin ecosystem is a vibrant and ever-changing community of innovation and collaboration. Indeed, this is probably one of the main contributing factors to the success and popularity of Rails. In addition, the rise of GitHub has accelerated this pace of innovation and collaboration even further and ushered in a new era of “social coding.” This environment is to be embraced not shunned. This chapter discusses how to situate yourself in this ecosystem by using GitHub effectively.
