8 Writing for Short Films
SHORTS ARE TO features what sonnets/haiku are to novels.
A short film script can be a great calling card for a writer, and it can be a great calling card for a director and a writer/director team. In order for it to become a great calling card, you need to make your short script as perfect as you possibly can. The audience for a short will be far more critical than that of a feature.
Short films are not a lesser form of cinematic storytelling – you are unlikely to make money from them. Although TV broadcast opportunities may be limited, they do get shown in cinemas, they do win awards, and they do work as an introduction to talent. Many of the best writers and directors started out with shorts.
