On June 12, 2022, London’s Sunday Times reported that “the Bank of England has handed a contract worth £203,000 to [a certain] consultancy. The remit is to help ‘define the essence’ of the organization and explain why people should be proud and motivated to work for the Bank” (Chambers, Prufock diary section, London Sunday Times, 2022).
The conventional assumption that employees need this “explained” to them by a consultancy, top down, will be vigorously contested in this book. In September 2021, the McKinsey Quarterly warned:
