THE GIFT AND THE FAVOR

How many times around the holidays have you met with a friend, who—surprise!—brought you a gift? It never dawned on you that you were doing a gift exchange—you certainly never thought to bring a present. So you smile politely and open the gift, see the finely packaged scented soap (it’s always scented soap), and thank the gift giver profusely.

How do you feel when you open the surprise gift knowing you have nothing to give back? You might feel some combination of flattery, anxiety, and embarrassment—but mostly, you’re probably just thinking, “Man, do I wish I had a gift to give this person.” And more likely than not, you probably follow up with a gift for the person in the next couple of weeks.
