A

Abacus

In a Classical order, the flat, sometimes moulded, section between the top of the capital and bottom of the architrave. See Columns and Piers, p. 64.

Abutment

A wall or pier built to withstand an arch’s lateral thrust. See Arches, p. 72.

Acanthus

A stylized decorative form based on the leaf of an acanthus plant. It is an integral element of Corinthian and Composite capitals, but is also used as a discrete element or as part of a moulded ensemble. See Walls and Surfaces, p. 108.

Acroteria

Sculptures – usually urns, palmettes or statues – placed on flat pedestals on top of a pediment. If sculpture is placed at the outer angles of a pediment rather than at the apex, they are called ‘acroteria angularia’. See The Classical Temple, ...
