I AM pleased to introduce Readings in Multimedia Computing and Networking, which has been a goal of the Multimedia Information and Systems Series at Morgan Kaufmann for a number of years. Many have encouraged and assisted in this work. I am grateful to all of those who have contributed to bringing this important project to fruition, especially the editors.
The editors have added substantial value to this volume. It was a pleasure to work with the contributing editors who introduce each group of papers.
