THE BASIC FACILITIES for storing, fetching, transmitting, and rendering multimedia data objects discussed elsewhere in this book are only meaningful when put in the context of multimedia presentations that are packaged for human consumption. This chapter presents several important papers in the literature that address the issues of creating and maintaining combinations of multimedia objects into presentations for viewers/readers/listeners. This area has been historically referred to as authoring multimedia.
