Introduction

This is the last technical chapter of this book and for good reason. Of all the types of visual effects introduced in this text (lighting, in-camera, in-material, and simulations), particles can be the most involved. They are the aggregate of all the other types of effects and more. They can be light sources. They can be combined in the post-process and manipulated in-camera before display. They are geometric objects and must have material properties to be perceived. They are also simulations using mathematical and physical models for animating reality and rendering natural phenomena. Since particles are a combination of all these other effects, then “Just what are Particles?” ...
