Whoever thought that something called a “gooey” would ever be so important to the way we use a computer? While most of the world clutched their crib sheets to remember “how-to” keyboard codes for saving a document, moving to the end of a line, or drawing a box, a few visionary researchers came upon a simple idea: a graphical user interface, or GUI (gooey). “Why not,” these researchers asked, “make using a computer more intuitive?” These researchers developed the underpinnings of the Macintosh GUI, which in turn laid the groundwork for desktop publishing.
