Edition-Based Redefinition

Oracle Database 11g introduced edition-based redefinition (EBR), a new concept in the Oracle Database that is available for all editions of the database at no extra cost. Over the years a number of technologies have been used to reduce the downtime of the Oracle Database. The one thing that could keep users working uninterrupted was the actual database application they were using. Upgrading the database application always required downtime; it was simply not possible to replace PL/SQL objects that were in use.
