Step 1 When choosing the pose for a portrait, it is important to think about the qualities that are particularly special about your subject. This is an extremely sweet and energetic young lady, and I wanted to capture her personality in my portrait. I didn’t want to draw her with a full smile because her eyes would be smaller and not as expressive. To reflect her love of sports, I chose to draw her in a polo shirt. I like to have my female subjects choose some jewelry because necklaces and bracelets offer additional textural interest. For portraits, I almost always use smooth Bristol paper, as it is best for capturing the subtle details. ...
