LET'S ESTABLISH SOME ground rules before we get started. These are some core thoughts about what it means, from my perspective, to be human. I offer them not as a psychology lesson, but rather so that you will know where I am coming from throughout the rest of the book. That way, we can all agree – or agree to disagree – about some basic points that we all have in common. Reading through this, and staying open to the ideas here, will make you a better teammate, leader, and world changer. These ideas provide a sense of connection to others that is deeper than the superficiality of the world often allows.
Humans need a sense of meaning. We need to feel that we are valuable contributors to something meaningful, greater than ourselves, and that we matter amidst that process. That said, we are all insecure and frightened creatures, desperate for validation, hurtling toward uncertain individual ends with no roadmap to guide the way.
