The observations process is defined, and then put into practice by examining this initial stage of analysis for the domains of music and lyrics in popular, recorded song. Practical matters will be found alongside more conceptual issues. The analyst’s playback system can impact observations of music and lyrics; while a detailed discussion of playback is postponed to Chapter 6, its presence is felt throughout this chapter.
