There are many different digital video formats produced for today's computer platforms, and it seems like there are different standards for different operating systems. Fortunately, Linux comes with several players that can handle different forms of video successfully. Some of the digital video formats include

  • Amiga—Amiga MovieSetter animations

  • AVI—Microsoft's Audio Video Interleave format

  • FLI/FLC—Autodesk's Flic Animation format

  • GIF87/89a—Animated GIF files

  • MPEG—Moving Picture Expert Group

  • QuickTime—Apple's QuickTime

  • RealPlayer—RealPlayer streaming audio and video

  • SGI—SGI Movie Format Files

  • Utah Raster Toolkit—Run Length Encoded images
