This chapter presents an overview of the principal science and policy issues related to REDD’s success or failure.
Science background
According to the IPCC, the premier consensus-based scientific body on all aspects of natural and anthropogenic climate change, warming from anthropogenic causes of the climate system is widespread. The concentration of atmospheric CO2 has increased from a pre-industrial level of about 280 ppm1 to 379 ppm in 2005 (IPCC 2007: 25).2 The concern is that we have reached a tipping point that could lead to permanent damages and significant, difficult to evaluate, costs.
