Embracing Competency for Life: Two University Stories

Academic programs that rigorously assess and intentionally develop soft skills do exist, and many more are in early stages of implementation. In this chapter, we highlight two very different programs in traditional ­institutions that have made the transition from saying they teach soft skills to actually assessing and developing them. In both cases, these are not individual programs, but reflect philosophies of competency that are interwoven into the fabric of the entire curriculum.
