The first part of this chapter is a straightforward (in some ways) essay which discusses the uses of South Asian music and cultural forms by the band Kula Shaker. It was presented at the Perth symposium and so bears some of the marks of writing for oral presentation. As there was some lively discussion and criticism there, I have tried to recapture some of that engagement here through the device of a supplementary discussion.
