Among the more problematic trends in education in recent decades is the rise of high‐stakes testing. It's not that testing, even standardized testing, doesn't have a purpose. A test can show us some things about what's working or not working in our schools or for an individual student. But when a test is used as the primary measure of success and failure, it causes several problems.

High‐stakes testing, or tests that determine a child's or school's prospects, are inherently unjust. A test is always a limited measure and a score can indicate many things other than the capabilities of the student.
