PREFACE

Since cofounding the Beyond Budgeting Round Table (BBRT) in 1997 with colleagues Robin Fraser and Peter Bunce, I have visited many organizations that have successfully broken free from the annual performance trap set by fixed targets and annual budgets. Many of these organizations have seen a step change in performance as their managers learn to manage the business rather than the numbers. In 2003 Robin and I completed a book entitled Beyond Budgeting that included twelve principles that have since guided the actions of many organizations in their attempts to adopt this management model.
