Very few companies can weather extreme change; most successful companies flourish under certain circumstances and leadership and then fade from view. Of the original Fortune 500 in 1955, only 12 percent (sixty companies) are on the list in 2018. In 1965, firms in the Standard & Poor’s 500 stayed in the index for an average of thirty-three years. By 1990, the average tenure in the S&P 500 had narrowed to twenty years. That time is forecast to shrink to fourteen years by 2026.
