It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Networking in the data center and the cloud takes more than opening a socket. These networks incorporate more redundancy and security than desktop networks. Add in a layer or two of virtualization, and applications and services can behave very differently than they do in the safe confines of the IDE.
