6 Copy/Synthesize/Morph

At this point, we’ve discussed collecting and analyzing styles. Now we’re ready to practice executing styles through the central exercise of this book, which is called Copy/Synthesize/Morph. This exercise results in four drawings. It begins by executing two master copies of works by two distinctly different artists. Remember, the master copy is a well-established assignment used by artists for hundreds of years to identify the master’s methods via the act of copying. The objective is to replicate the works as closely as possible, thereby pushing the student to improve skills in handling the media and understanding compositional choices.
