IT CAN TAKE some people a lifetime, but for Michael Judge, it took less than three months to see through the mirage of corporate life and spot its main culprit: bad management.

After graduating with a degree in physics from the University of California, San Diego, in 1985, Michael headed to the optimistic land of Silicon Valley to work as an engineer at a start-up video card company.
