Geometric Primitives

In this chapter we catalog the rich set of primitives that serve as shape descriptors for characters, props and effects in RenderMan scenes.

4.1 Surfaces

Artists see the world as an interplay of space, light and form. This chapter is about geometric form or more specifically, about surfaces. Take a moment to look around you and appreciate the varieties of shape and form, both natural and human-made. Objects in the physical world range from atoms to galaxies, spanning a vast scale. Even the range of objects visible to the naked eye span several size magnitudes from tiny specks of dust to huge mountain ranges.
