Abstract

Due to the depletion of fossil fuels and hazardous emissions from compression ignition engines, as well as the necessity to fulfil the energy demands of an ever-increasing population, it has become necessary to seek out an alternate source of fuel. Recent study showed that oxygenated fuels have a bright future because they are sustainable and can be made from a variety of sources, as well as locally. Furthermore, oxygenated fuels are ecofriendly fuels as they help to improve engine emissions also. Hence, the objective of this study is to provide a detailed overview of the performance, combustion, and emission characteristics of certain common oxygenated fuels in SI/CI engines. In addition, the correlation between physical and chemical properties of these oxygenated fuels and the characteristics of emissions is explored. This comprehensive analysis of the published literature will be helpful in understanding the state-of-the-art technology of the oxygenated-fueled engine.
