Chapter 9. Creating Test Cases from Use Cases

This chapter describes how to create functional test cases from use cases. In many projects the importance of this step is not recognized. Often the testers are given a printout of a Use Case Specification and then perform ad hoc manual testing. However, if we neglect formal creation of test cases, we may end up with poor coverage of a testing universe while performing many duplicate tests.

Presented here is a formal method that facilitates achieving quite good coverage using a reasonable number of test cases. This approach was introduced by Jim Heumann [HEU01a] [HEU01b].
