Logging rushes
As it is expensive to hire edit suites, a lot of preparation needs to take place before the final edit. A list of shots needs to be made so that the director can make a rough list of how she or he wants to put together the final item or programme. This is called a ‘paper edit’. To do this quickly and efficiently, the director must know where the shots needed are on the tape(s) so someone, e.g. the PA, researcher, video journalist or director, needs to view the rushes (the unedited footage) and at the same time log the time-code and details of the shots.
