Appendix A: Copyright

Copyright and other areas of the law are highly specialized areas which change, both because of new Acts and also because of precedents set in test cases. The first modern copyright law was passed in 1911, but it has been modified by legislation in 1956, 1988 and 1995 and further amendments are due. The researcher cannot be expected to know the fine detail of these Acts, but must be aware of their existence.

Copyright is an area in which whole armies of lawyers make a good and regular living. This section cannot transform you into an expert and you should not rely on it because it is necessarily over-simplified – there are exceptions to almost every principle cited here.
