Starting Your Research

Abstract

The goal of this chapter is to introduce the various types of scientific research available to cyber security scientists. This chapter introduces the process of starting and performing research, with application in the field of cyber security. It describes the four categories of research—theoretical, observational, experimental, and applied research—and explains what they are best suited for and how they fit together. The chapter describes how to start the scientific process from a single question and provides guidance on deciding where/how to begin and subsequently progress the research path using scientific methods, such as exploratory studies, descriptive studies, and machine learning.
