Introduction
My first experience of field research was my PhD project, which brought together three global sites: refugee camps in Tanzania, the border zone between Spain and Morocco, and detention centres in Australia. I had broad goals: I wanted to disturb traditional security narratives of global borders, and to situate the non-citizen at the centre of analysis not as a problem but as a powerful and transgressive actor. The project was designed around ethnographic methods in order to start from the “on the ground” perspective of the migrant, and so establish an understanding of global patterns of migration and border control “from below”. ...
