Introduction

My research project The Geopolitics of Microbes began on a hot Danish summer day bicycling through the enveloping smell of pig farm. Denmark, which in The Guardian has been described as “the world’s laboratory for industrial pig farming,” was at the time enthralled in a nationwide debate about methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These bacteria, which are resistant to antibiotics because of overuse in pig farming, were spreading from pigs to humans.
