Introduction: accessing the “field”
In this chapter, I discuss the process of research design and data collection for a study of terrorism expertise, which entailed a mix of methods including interviews, archival research, discourse analysis, and network analysis. Although eventually published as a monograph (Stampnitzky 2013), the project began life as a doctoral dissertation, written in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It grew out of my desire to understand the American response to the attacks: how and why had the United States become embroiled in an all-encompassing and seemingly never-ending “war on terror”? ...
