Introduction

HRM emerged in the early 20th century in an attempt to address organizational challenges, in response to economic development and industrial change, and to add value through effectively managing and rationalizing the employment relationship (Ulrich and Dulebohn, 2015). Since its inception the purpose of HR has evolved from providing purely welfare administration to providing support. For many the prime purpose of HRM is now seen as: ‘Helping the organization to have the greatest possible chance of success through its employees. This is about how we attract recruit, look after, motivate, develop and help to change people’ (HR Manager, Automotive sector, Australia).
