Introduction

HR has evolved significantly since its inception, transitioning from an administrative department into a core function. This transformation has, in turn, increased the complexity of its role, with HR attempting to become increasingly strategic whilst still having to carry out traditional transactional activities. At the same time the function struggles with both the inward and outward focused aspects of its role and how it is perceived by managers and leaders. These issues have added to the challenge and complexity of the role of HR, causing a lack of clarity and/or focus which has led to criticisms that the function is no longer relevant and does not add value.
