Third-Generation Cellular (3G) refers to the third generation of Personal Communication Service (PCS) wireless digital voice service. In fact, the frequencies used by 3G overlap PCS frequencies in the United States. To succeed, however, 3G will need to be much more than cellular telephonyIt builds on the development of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital telephony specified as IS-95 and developed largely by Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM, www.qualcomm.com. The IS-95 system uses direct sequence spread spectrum over a 1.25 MHz passband. 3G uses a passband of 5, 10, or 20 MHz, also with CDMA. Hence, the term Wideband CDMA, or W-CDMA, refers to the underlying physical layer.
