Chapter 4: Protection against electric shock
Abstract
This chapter presents principles of protection against electric shock in low-voltage electrical installations. Requirements for fault protection by automatic disconnection of supply are discussed. Conditions for the effectiveness of the protection in TN, TT, and IT system are considered. The application of residual current devices and their operation in the aforementioned systems are explained. Sources of residual current devices’ improper operation in TN-C system are indicated. Also, some problems of residual current devices’ operation in an IT system—the effect of the fault point location and the residual current device location on the effectiveness of protection—are indicated.
