Chapter 1: Genesis of residual current devices

Abstract

In this chapter, the idea for residual current protection has been presented. The first document—patent application dated in the year 1928—referring to a residual current protective system of persons is commented. According to this bold idea, a protection device should be able to trip out when the residual current of value around 10–50 mA is present. The evolution in the construction of residual current devices is discussed—from early constructions, which, contrary to the present solutions, were mainly voltage-dependent devices to first modern one.
