Chapter 7: Backup protection of residual current devices
Abstract
Residual current devices can be produced as either residual current operated circuit-breakers without integral overcurrent protection (RCCB) or residual current operated circuit-breakers with integral overcurrent protection (RCBO). The first of the aforementioned types (RCCB) is not designed to perform the functions of protection against overloads and short-circuits. Therefore it is required to use a backup protection of RCCBs. As a backup protection device, it is recommended to use a fuse. The fuse should be strictly coordinated with the RCCB, according to the manufacturer recommendation.
