The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most difficult and challenging crises for leaders to manage in the 21st century. By the first week of June 2021, the coronavirus has sickened 173 million people around the world. By that time 3.73 million people have died due to the coronavirus. In the United States alone, over 597,000 have died because of COVID-19 complications. American life expectancy fell by one year, to 77.8 years, in the first half of 2020. The virus is not yet contained with many countries sprinting to develop a coronavirus vaccine or treatment with unclear policies, shifting priorities, and contradictory strategies.
