The ‘brutalist’ buildings of the 1960s and 1970s represent a big challenge for retrofit. At Guy’s Hospital Tower the work was carried out with the tower fully and continuously occupied and the scope of the retrofit was limited to overcladding. There was no possibility of a ‘deep retrofit’ or of targeting the investment for maximum reduction of energy and carbon.
