The Research Design
From the beginning, KRW approached the ROC study as descriptive research. We wished to apply some rigor to the subject of how CEOs actually behave in the workplace and the impact their behavior appears to have on the workforce and profitability.
CEOs were invited to participate in this research mostly by word of mouth. A CEO client of KRW, Mike McGavick (currently the CEO of XL Group), introduced me to Jim Sinegal at Costco. He agreed to participate in our first pilot project. Sinegal in turn introduced me to Steve Rogel at Weyerhaeuser, and so on. I also met CEOs in social contexts, on airplanes, and in other serendipitous ways.
