The noncompensatory techniques don't allow for tradeoffs between the attributes. Even though Thai Buffet and Hamburger Heaven have the same speedy service, maybe Thai Buffet has better food than Hamburger Heaven but Hamburger Heaven is less expensive than Thai Buffet. Maybe Hamburger Heaven's prices are so low that it makes up for the difference in food quality. The compensatory family of techniques allows better performance on one attribute to compensate for poorer performance in another, tradeoffs between the attributes will be allowed.
