Chapter 29Design solutions for easy replication and reuse

Scaling is about replicating the adoption of the solution in different environments to achieve enterprise-wide impact. The classic situations where replication is needed include scaling across a network of production facilities, different geographic markets, different customer segments, or different organizational groups. We will refer to these replication targets simply as “units” in this chapter.

Scaling requires designing the most effective replication approach to roll out across every unit and creating an efficient method to reuse and adapt the digital solution to the specifics of different units.

Designing an effective replication approach

Start by defining which solutions to scale and where. This typically requires different unit leaders to agree on the value in their particular unit, understand what is expected of them, free up the right financial and human resources, and agree on their accountability for the expected benefits. Next, you need to determine the sequencing of units where the solution will be deployed. There are typically three important considerations in the design of the sequencing: time to value, ease of implementation, and unit readiness. Exhibit 29.1 is an example of how one mining company used these considerations in sequencing its scaling effort.
