We get asked this question all the time: What about culture?
Business leaders recognize the importance of culture but are often stymied about what it takes to build a digital culture – the mindsets and behaviors that support and accelerate their digital and AI transformation. In our experience, this is often because people consider culture in vague terms, as a set of mindsets and behaviors to develop without a clear sense for how or even why.
In fact, culture is the result of a set of actions, incentives, new skills, and leadership attributes.
The entirety of this book adds up to the actions needed to build a digital culture: building pattern recognition of executives on the possibilities offered by digital and AI, hiring new tech talent, bringing IT closer to the business, learning new ways of working, making technology and data easily consumable to foster innovation across the company, developing product owners, etc.
While digital culture is an outcome of all of these efforts, being intentional about developing a digital culture starts with being clear about the leadership attributes you expect from your leaders – and tracking progress against them (see Exhibit 32.1).1
